This time, we're decorating the front room, which I guess would be called the living and dining rooms. This area, though it takes up about 1/3 of the space in our entire house, is almost never used. I think the reason is that a.) there is no decor in there and b.) there's nothing interesting to do or see in there. Thus far, it's just been an area where we stuff the stuff that doesn't have a place. So we're trying to change that by re-painting and adding new curtains, a bookcase, and a rug. D and I disagree on whether or not to add a TV. I think it would make a nice place where the girls could go to watch something else when the guys are sitting in the living room watching baseball or something. D says that three TVs in one house is excessive. I kindof agree with him, but my solution to that is to take the one out of the bedroom. When we first moved in, I was against having a TV in the bedroom. But we had two TVs, so we had to put the other one somewhere. Now I think trying to take it out would be like trying to ween ourselves off of caffeine - painful.

We've seen some good shows this summer. We saw Pete Yorn last Friday at Center Stage. He was excellent! I need to put him on my ipod. Also, we saw Michael McDonald a few weeks ago, and we're going to see Steely Dan next month. D saw Personal and the Pizzas last night at the Earl. I feel like a bum for not seeing my friends, but I just couldn't make it on a Monday night. I'm old like that. They are so awesome, though!

My sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces are coming to Atlanta this weekend for a mini-vacay. I'm so excited! They're also bringing their 10-week-old puppy, Daisy. We're going to have so much fun. D, C, and I are taking the girls to the water park on Saturday while Oz keeps Daisy occupied. Can't wait!

Anniversary Dinner

D and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary on Wednesday! I only went ONE MILE (and I still had to walk up the hill). I am so out of shape. I don't care, though, because my knees seem to be okay today! I hope this is the beginning of being able to get back into it. I have been dealing with pain in both my knees since last summer. Granted, it's not really BAD pain or anything. It's just that it won't go away. I have now been to see my regular doctor, an orthopaedic doctor, a "gait analysis" guy, and two physical therapists. The trouble is that they aren't getting any better. I picked up my new, hand-made orthopaedic inserts on Thursday and today my right knee hurts worse than ever. There's this disturbing popping sound coming from it. I never thought I would miss running and working out so much. I feel like an old woman! We had a wonderful shower - the new mother-to-be looked so cute! She also got some amazing gifts, including this:

http://www.wrybaby.com/mysterio-predicts.aspx

(Mysterio predicted that little M will be a monkey wrangler)

and this:

http://www.wrybaby.com/detail.aspx?ID=64

I thought this website was so cute! Also, our host made tasty egg salad, a banana cake, and a fruit salad in the shape of a baby carriage.

The only downside to the entire weekend was Airtran. All told, I had over 6 hours of delays both coming and going. I give them an F+.

Here are some pics from our photo session with the new dad-to-be on Saturday night.

http://flickr.com/photos/easement/2707824803/

I think the King mask is amazing. Our host said he surprised his wife with it by delivering breakfast in bed to her wearing it one morning. I think she screamed.

Babies

This weekend, I am heading to DC for my friend's baby shower. Has it seriously been a year since I last posted? I can't believe it! I am sorry, friends, for letting so much time go by.

Lately, D and I have been busy working on the house. We are having a July 4th party tomorrow (oh how I wish all of my out-of-town ladies could be there too!), and the original plan was to try and have most of the work done by then so that we could show off to our friends and family.

Unfortunately, the showing off part has not worked out exactly as planned. We have now painted the living room for the THIRD time, and we admitted to each other today that neither one of us likes it! We started off with what we thought was a pretty blue color but, once applied to the wall, turned out to be a definite lavender. Then we tried a robin's egg blue. The color was true to it's name - it just looked horrible on the wall (imagine pepto bismal, only blue). Now we have painted everything what we hoped would be a sunny yellow. It's pretty, but just too bright. It looks like some sort of crazy dessert. Who knew that re-decorating was this hard?

Fortunately, some of our other attempts at improvements have worked out better. We re-painted and re-decorated the master bathroom, and I think it looks really cute. It must be easier to do a smaller space? We also got a wooden fence installed in the backyard, which has given us much more privacy from the road and made us more comfortable leaving Oz outside. D and his dad have also been working really hard on the yard, and it looks so pretty and neat. I love it!

Well, I hope all of you have a wonderful July Fourth! If you come to my house, please do your best to ignore the crazy yellow living room.

There's Nothing Like a Little Self-Medicating

I woke up this morning in the worst mood. The most frustrating thing about days like this is that I usually can't even tell you why I feel the way I do. I seem to lack that insight into my own personality that tells you these things. Consequently, I am left with those close to me asking, "what's wrong?" all day long, and the only response I can give them is, "I don't know."

Was it the comment from my coworker yesterday afternoon? "Geez, Laura, even your hard hat is black!" Or the one from my other coworker this morning? "What are you WEARING?" (Incidentally, coworker #1 is consistently rude and annoying and I pretty much always want to give him a sharp poke in the eye. If he didn't program the thermostats to go down to sub-zero temperatures all day long, I wouldn't have to wear the over sized, librarian-type, black sweater every day that prompted the comment from coworker #2.)

Anyway, I felt completely repulsive by the end of the day. My bad mood seemed to grow bigger and bigger until it consumed everything I did. Even as I was picking a fight with my completely innocent and perfectly sweet husband, I could hear my inner voice in the back of my head yelling "stop!" Only I couldn't stop!

After work, I decided that there was only one thing that was going to make me feel better. I took myself to the mall. Not just one mall, but TWO. And I bought myself three pairs of the exact same pants, only in three different colors. Plus, three of the exact same pique polo shirt in three different colors.

But you know what? Not one of those colors was black.

Miracle Fruit

My cousin has been really into fruit trees for about the past year or so. He and his friends have been riding their bikes around Atlanta, trying to see what types of wild fruits and berries they can collect. They have tried all kinds of wild grapes, figs, blueberries, raspberries, etc. They collected so many apples and varieties of apples that they had a cider party in the fall.

Anyway, he's been talking about this plant that heard about for a month. It's called Miracle Fruit. Apparently, when you eat the berries from the tree, it temporarily causes anything sour you eat to taste sweet.

It took him a long time to find one. He finally bought a plant from Florida and it has just now grown to the point where it has produced berries. He brought one over to my Aunt's house yesterday. He cut it in half, and he and his girlfriend each ate half of it. Then we all watched while they ate a lemon, a lime, and a grapefruit with no problem at all. They said it tasted like it was coated in sugar! They even drank vinegar straight from the bottle. It was the wierdest thing. I looked it up online, and it says that they use this plant in Japan as a sweetner. The food apparently tastes horrible until you give people these berries to eat before they try it. I hope those show up.

We started in Vegas on Wednesday. We met Carly & Robbie there, which was awesome! If you go to Vegas in the near future, I highly recommend the Bellagio. Not only do they have about 5 swimming pools, but some of them are chilled for your comfort. Wouldn't want the guests to get too hot while laying out, now would we? If you're feeling thirsty, just raise the little flag on the back of your deck chair and the waitress will come right over to take your order. (My favorite bev was the "Pink" - so yummy and refreshing!).

The gym & spa are awesome, but a little expensive ($25 for a day). I will say, though, that it was one of the best workouts I've ever had. I got to run on the treadmill with my own private tv screen. Halfway through, the lady came around with chilled, scented towels. Completely amazing.

We tried very hard to go to Pure because we all wanted to see some celebs. Alas, we weren't able to even get up to the door. They had the strangest line system outside ever. Basically, it looked like only hot girls were getting in and everyone else was swarming around trying to get in. We even saw someone try to bribe a bouncer. After about 20 minutes, we gave up and went to Club Light in the Bellagio. It was way easier to get in, didn't cost anything, and played good music. We totally rocked it until last call.

Another highlight of Vegas was the helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. Since we weren't there for very long, this was perfect because it only takes about 4 hours altogether. They land you on the Canyon floor and serve you breakfast or lunch (depending on the time). They also fly you over the strip and the Hoover Dam. We got some of the most amazing pictures.

After Vegas, we rented a Jeep and drove to Sequoia National Forest. It feels like you are in another world. A world in which you are very, very small. The biggest tree on the planet is there (the General Sherman Tree). It's so big that, if you filled it with water, it would have enough water inside to supply an average American household for 3.5 years. It's also bigger than the Statue of Liberty. It was completely awe-inspiring and amazing.

From there, we drove to Santa Cruz. It took awhile to get there, but it was a beautiful drive. California is so different from the South! It was so cool to drive through the desert and the mountains. We pulled into Sant Cruz around 5 pm, just in time to meet the Still Flyin' gang at the hotel. They played that night, and the show was great! They even invited Excalibrah on stage for a version of "Have You Ever Been This Gansta?"

After Santa Cruz, we drove down the PCH and stayed in Montery and Carmel. Both were beautiful. We went whale watching in Montery. It was cold, but it turned out to be a great day to go. We saw humpback whales breaching and slapping their fins on the water.

The last stop was Los Angeles. We stayed with some of D's friends from high school. They took us to some of their favorite places. The first was The Dresden, where I found my other favorite bev of the trip - a Blood and Sand. We also went to a very cool bar called Nic's, and we ate the Tower of Seafood at Mastro's.

All in all, this was one of my favorite trips of all time!

I'm A Steve

Twilight Ocho was completely amazing! I didn't recognize the number, and the caller had hit "1" to page me. I called back, and the man, Frank, introduced himself to me. He said that he had some bad news. I immediately got nervous.

He said that he was out very late on Monday night looking for his lost cat. While he was out, he found a dog that had been hit by a car. After seeing our posters, he was sure that it was Sophie. Being a very nice man, and considering that he was looking for a lost pet himself, he said that he couldn't leave here there. So, he picked her up and took her home and put her in a box to bury.

As it turns out, Frank lives just down the street from us. He asked me if I wanted him to bring her to us. He offered to keep her and bury her himself. I said no, that we would take care of it, and he said that he would bring her over.

DJ and I went out and bought a shovel. Then we met Frank and put Sophie in the backyard under a tree. We wanted her there with us - in our backyard, forever a part of our family.

I will never forget yesterday. I will always miss Sophie - "yittle Soph." I will never forget how the kindness of a stranger offered us some peace and comfort on a very difficult day. DJ and I came home and let Soph out in the backyard, as we have been doing since the move. The weather has been so nice that we wanted to give her a little fresh air and play time. Needless to say, when I went out about 2 hours later to give her dinner, she was gone. I have no idea how she got out. She did this once before about two months ago, when we first moved into the house. We found her right away, though, and we plugged up what we thought was the hole in the fence through which she escaped. She has outsmarted me again, though! I think she is either small enough to squeeze through the gap between the fence and the gate, or she is outright climbing the fence. Either way, she is being a bad dog!

I'm worried about her, though. I went to Animal Control yesterday and looked to see if they had picked her up, but she wasn't there. DJ and I put signs all around the neighborhood last night, but we haven't gotten any calls yet. He also called the closest vet office to see if anyone has brought her in. We live on such a busy street. I hope that she is okay and that she comes home soon!

"Ghost Rider"

Is terrible. Don't go see it. Sometimes I think my ability to tell a good movie from a bad one has been lost. I was really excited about this movie in a fairly nerdy sort of way. I like Nicholas Cage, and he was pretty good for this part, but everytime the Ghost Rider opened his mouth, it sounded dumb. People were laughing at things that weren't supposed to be funny. Overall, D and I gave it a D+.

Does Anyone Have a Catering License?

This weekend was one of the busiest I have ever had. I was nervous about it being too much, but it turned out to be so, so wonderful.

On Friday, D and I officially bought our first house. I can't believe it! It only took approximately 30 minutes to sign all the paperwork and then we were homeowners! As we were leaving the fancy office of the lawyer who handled the closing, we danced around in the elevator. It HAS to be one of the top 5 moments ever.

Friday night we had a party at our old house for Carly and Robbie. We had so much fun, but it was a sad, sad, sad goodbye. You're not supposed to cry at a party, right? I promised myself that I wouldn't, but then ended up in a honey huddle, swaying back & forth to Pavement and sniffing like a baby. It was such a roller coaster. We went from singing karaoke at the top of our lungs, to crying, to singing again in no time at all.

One of the best parts was that I got to hang out with one of my bestest friends, who was here visiting from her new home in Washington, DC. It was so good to hang out and catch up again!

It's hard to describe all of the changes that happened this month and how I feel about them. One the one hand, I am so sad about my friends moving. I truly am happy for them, and I know that life in their new cities is going to be so amazing. I already miss them so much, though!! I keep asking D, "Will we be lonely? What are we going to do with ourselves?" I keep feeling kindof left behind or something. On the other hand, though, I am so excited about the new house. It really feels like we've opened a new chapter in our lives. The whole house-buying process has made me feel like we're even closer than before. It is so wonderful and special, and I know it's going to be the best thing ever.

Anyway, we spent Saturday and Sunday resting, cleaning, packing, & moving and then on Sunday night we went up to Athens to celebrate New Year's Eve. Some folks had rented out the top floor of Tasty World. I had never been up to the third floor before, and it was so much fun!! It felt like we were dancing in the rafters. We danced and danced until the police came and shut the party down because they said you had to have a catering license. In summary, we were partying so hard, you had to have a license to do it.

I hope that all of my friends and family had an equally as wonderful New Years. I hope they all know that I am thinking about them and love them with all my heart. Only the best in 2007!

The New OTP

I've been afraid to post about this, because the deal is not completely done yet. So far, it's been exhausting. Interesting, but exhausting.

We started looking several weeks ago. Since the beginning, I have had visions of us finding a cute little house inside the perimeter. Nothing huge, nothing expensive - just a cute little place with a yard and a nice kitchen. In my fantasy, the important thing is the neighborhood. It's the kind of neighborhood that I see on television all the time. There are friendly women walking down the street with cute dogs on leashes. There are nice people working in their gardens next door. There is a neighborhood pool where residents have cookouts and Christmas gatherings. In essence, the whole place feels like home.

Over the past few weeks, we've searched hard for the fantasy house. It involves lots of driving around, following small red "home for sale" signs with arrows and balloons attached. It means pulling out lots of fliers rolled up into tubes or plastic boxes. It means being really patient.

We've had to revise our search a couple of times, but we've got some good prospects, I think. Maybe soon we'll be homeowners!

Dirty Deed

I'm finally updating my blog (thanks for all your help, Jen!). I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to write a new entry. It has taken me awhile to figure out how to change the background. The next step is to figure out how to edit pictures. I think I should be able to add some more photos this weekend.

So, I went running tonight with my husband's coworker. We have hung out a few times before, and I really like her. This is the first time we have ever been running together. I was excited about the possibility of having a new exercise partner.

Anyway, she invited me to go trail running at this park in Sandy Springs. I work in Duluth, so it's a pretty long haul to get over there. I was a little late finishing up with some stuff at work, so I ducked into the bathroom at 5:20 to change into my running clothes. I had put on my shorts and shoes when I realized that I forgot to bring a sports bra. Crap! It was too far to go home, so I had to stop by a store on the way to the park.

I ran into Target and bought the first one I could find (it happened to be on sale!). I ran back into the parking lot and hopped into the car. Then I stopped - how was I going to get the thing on? Screw it. I did the most unlady-like thing possible. I glanced around to see if anyone was looking, and I put that thing on in the Target parking lot. Classy, huh?

JT Concert!

Carly and I went to see Justin Timberlake at the Tabernacle this past Sunday. I have to say, I would probably never listen to either of these two bands on my own, but the show was pretty awesome. Michael McD brought out a full choir to sing with him on the last three songs!

Michael McD and Steely Dan are two of DJ's favorite bands ever, so after the show, he went up to the stage to try and get a copy of the setlist.

One of our favorite places to go out in Atlanta is The Cavern, which is in the Virgina Highlands. The past several times that we've gone in there on the weekend, this DJ has been playing. Both he and his set-up are so cheezy. He has a shaved head, and he only wears black. He also wears those spikey collars and braclets. All around his Dj booth are Christmas lights in the shape of dog bones! His name is DJ Evil Jet. For some reason, though, Deeg has trouble remembering this guy's name, and he usually calls him DJ Evil Rob.

The operative word, though, is EVIL. The guy is a total toad. One time, Licky went up and requested that he play some Interpol. He told her no because he hates Interpol and refused to play her request! Regardless, we are always nice to him because he plays good 80's music. DJ even tipped him the last time we were there.

So anyway, DJ goes up to the stage after the show to try and get a copy of the set list. There were a lot of other people up there trying to do the same thing. The crew breaking down the stage were pretty much ignoring everyone and it wasn't looking like anyone was going to get a set list. All of a sudden, DJ spots DJ Evil Jet! He is working as a crew member, helping to break down the stage, and he has a set list IN HIS HAND!

DJ, in his drunkeness, screams out, "DJ Evil Rob! DJ Evil Rob! I see you at The Cavern all the time! Can I have that setlist?"

DJ Evil Jet just looks at him, smiles in his evil way, and say, "Sorry man." Then he folds the set list up and puts it in his pocket!

So that's why I am saying DOWN WITH DJ EVIL JET! No matter how nice you are to him, he's an impossible nut to crack. I think we need to start spending our Saturday nights somewhere else!

My New Favorite Drink

On Wednesday night, Hammy and I went to a friend's birthday drop-in at Trader Vic's in the bottom of the Hilton Hotel downtown. I had never been to one before, but it is a very cool bar. The tiki atmosphere and unique drinks made for a very cool birthday! We also had a good time riding the numerous elevators up and down while we tried to find the place.

While we were there, I found my new favorite drink. I had read several books where the Pimm's Cup was mentioned, and I had always wondered what one tasted like. I had also heard about the drink in relation to Wimbledon, and it sounded delicious.

My first taste confirmed my suspicions. The drink looked a little bit like a bloody mary, but it didn't taste like it at all. It was sweet and girly - just the way I like it!

Here is a recipe I found online. I highly recommed it!

Fill a Collins glass with ice

Mix one part Pimms Cup No. 1 with two parts lemonade

Stir or shake

Top off with club soda, or use lemon-lime soda for a sweeter drink

Stir lightly, but do NOT shake again

Garnish with a slice of kirby cucumber; lemon wedge optional

OPTIONS:

If not lemonade is at hand, use Sprite or 7-Up

To make with ginger ale, use plenty of lemons

Mint, apple & orange can be added

For the coup de grace, use borage leaves

If no

I Don't Wanna Be a Hussla'

My girlfriend Carly and I went dancing this weekend at the Jack Rabbit lounge in Buckhead. Our friend Elliot was djing, and we wanted to represent. Meanwhile, my husband, DJ, and Carly's fiance, Robbie, went to The Earl to see Oneida.

I had never been to the Jack Rabbit before, but it is a cool club. The dance floor is cute and the couches and tables are stylish and comfey. It's also pretty small, which makes it more accessible than the other clubs I've been to in Buckhead.

Elliot did an awesome job. The music was really good. He played the new Jay-Z/Beyonce song, and the new Christina Aguilera single, among others! It was the perfect mix for having a dance party. After a few Cosmo's and some Coors Lite, the new beer of choice, Carly and I danced it up.

After a while, we started to notice a problem. Most of the other people in the club were mixing it up - the couples were dancing together and the singles were moving around, meeting each other. This was my first visit to a club since I got married, and it posed a little bit of a quandry. Throughout the night, several different guys came up to us. We looked like single girls, I guess. There were just the two of us, dancing together. You know how it is in a club like that - the music is loud, and it's hard to really have a conversation. A couple of the guys wouldn't even really say much. It would be like, "Hey, I'm Mike," and then they'd just start dancing with you.

Carly and I quickly realized the problem: How do you let someone know that you're not available without coming off as being completely pretentious or rude? Do you yell back, "Hey, I'm married," first thing? Do you just stop dancing and politely excuse yourself?

Carly and I tried to take a more subtle approach. We would talk to the guys for a few minutes, then gradually work our husbands/fiances into the conversation. This worked well with one of the guys - he recently moved here from Canada. He seemed really cool and we talked to him for a long time about being new to the area and going to Braves games.

This didn't work well at all several times, though. Twice we had guys buy us shots. Before we started talking at all, they just said, "Hey, you guys come over here and let us buy you some shots." What were we supposed to say to that? We took the shots, of course!! We both made sure to take them with our left hands, hoping that they would notice the rings. They eventually got the message, but now without some scathing looks from at least one of the pairs of dudes.

The question is, could we have handeled it better? Robbie and DJ says that we where hustling people, since we accepted shots from "unsuspecting mens." Is that true? That actually made me feel kindof bad. I mean, I don't want to pull one over on anyone.

Is going to a club after you're married considered "false advertising?" Are married women not supposed to go out to certain places without their boys? Is this the end of girls night out?! I certainly hope not, as we had so much fun. By the end of the night, DJ and Robbie joined us, and Carly demonstrated how to do push-ups on the bathroom floor!

Tom Petty Has Been Rockin' for 30 Years

I heard a really cool interview with Tom Petty on Fresh Air this afternoon. To me, it would mean putting something out there for anyone to read. What if I didn't want strangers to see it? What could I possibly say that people would want to read? What if my grammer is really horrible?

Today, however, I realized the pure awesomeness of the blog. In ten minutes, I was able to see what three of my really good friends have been up to over the past two months. I got to see the new things that they're interested in and the things they have written about their lives. It is amazing to me how much you can learn about people you've known for years, simply by reading what they write!

So now I feel like I finally understand the blog. It's not something that strangers are necessarily going to read and critique at all. It's not a place where only people who are really clever and interesting can write. It's just a way to stay connected to the people I care about. And since a lot of my friends are doing exciting things right now and are moving to exciting new places, that is more important to me now than it has ever been.

So that is the purpose of this blog - to find out about all of the exciting things that are happening in the lives of my friends and family and to share some of the events that are happening in my life as well. And everyone will just have to forgive my horrible grammer.
